AMARULA-THE SOUTH AFRICAN CREAM LIQUEUR by Amitha Kunjumon (2017-2021 batch)

Amarula is a cream liqueur from South Africa made with sugar, cream and the fruit of the African marula tree (Sclerocarya birrea) which is also locally known as the Elephant tree or the Marriage Tree. It has an alcohol content of 17% by volume and was first marketed by Southern Liqueur Company of South Africa (the current trademark owners and wholly owned subsidiary of Distell Group Limited) as a liqueur in September 1989.It has the taste of fruity caramel and is widely regarded as Africa’s award winning cream liqueur. The world's second-biggest selling cream liqueur, has launched a dairy-free version named Amarula Marula Gold in South Africa though Vanilla-Spice flavoured liqueur exists. Once opened, Amarula cream liqueur should be refrigerated and consumed within a period of 6 months. The drink is rich in vitamin C and hence offers protection against scurvy. I am Manu Babu, a former student of SJIHMCT, Palai of 2015-2019 batch who is currently working in F&B Service dept. of Marriott Kochi.I was in-charge of Le Sommelier Club from 2018-2019.The club helped me a lot to improve my knowledge and skills on Food & Beverage Service. I used to participate in all the weekly competitions conducted by the club which enabled me in acquiring more knowledge in F&B. The club is the force that made me to take F&B Service as my area of specialization. Being the co-ordinator of the club has helped me to improve my leadership qualities. I am very glad to see the activities of the club and its growth and I wish the same to be continued.
