Amarula is a cream liqueur from South Africa made with sugar, cream and the fruit of the African marula tree (Sclerocarya birrea) which is also locally known as the Elephant tree or the Marriage Tree. It has an alcohol content of 17% by volume and was first marketed by Southern Liqueur Company of South Africa (the current trademark owners and wholly owned subsidiary of Distell Group Limited) as a liqueur in September 1989.It has the taste of fruity caramel and is widely regarded as Africa’s award winning cream liqueur.
The world's second-biggest selling cream liqueur, has launched a dairy-free version named Amarula Marula Gold in South Africa though Vanilla-Spice flavoured liqueur exists. Once opened, Amarula cream liqueur should be refrigerated and consumed within a period of 6 months. The drink is rich in vitamin C and hence offers protection against scurvy.
